What is Photobiomodulation and how it works

Photobiomodulation (PBM)—often referred to as red light therapy—uses specific red and near-infrared wavelengths (typically 633–1074nm) to support cellular performance and recovery mechanisms, without heat, pain, or downtime.

Cellular energy (ATP)

Light energy is absorbed by cellular chromophores—primarily within mitochondria—supporting efficient ATP production, signaling, and performance pathways.

Non-thermal, repeatable protocols

PBM is non-invasive and non-thermal. Outcomes depend on wavelength, irradiance, and exposure time—so systems must deliver controlled, uniform full-body distribution.

How it works: a 4-layer biological cascade

This is a simplified educational model of how red light therapy (PBM) can translate photons into cellular and systemic responses.

Therapeutic wavelength range
660nm
810nm
830nm
860nm
940nm
1074nm
Layer 1 — Light entry & optical interaction
  • Selective penetration through epidermis, dermis, and deeper tissues (wavelength dependent).
  • Chromophore absorption: cytochrome c oxidase, porphyrins, water clusters, opsins.
Layer 2 — Bioenergetic conversion (mitochondrial shift)
  • Near-infrared light may release nitric oxide (NO) blockade in respiration.
  • Electron flow and oxygen efficiency improve → ATP output rises.
  • NO supports microvascular flow via vasodilation.
Layer 3 — Cellular remodeling & biological response
  • Structural repair signaling (collagen, elastin, fibroblast activity).
  • Inflammatory modulation and oxidative stress balance.
  • Neurological support and synaptic efficiency.
Layer 4 — System integration & balance
  • Circadian and biological rhythm support.
  • Enhanced mind-body performance and recovery.
  • Improved cellular communication and coherence.

Effects vary by protocol, wavelength selection, and individual factors.
